Process difference
Live resin uses fresh-frozen flower extracted at -90 C. The terpene profile and minor cannabinoids stay intact. Distillate is extracted from any flower (live, cured, or trim) and then heavily refined to strip everything except the cannabinoid backbone. Distillate is then re-flavored with cannabis-derived or non-cannabis terpenes.

Live resin tastes like the strain. The flavor on the inhale is the flavor of the harvested plant. Distillate tastes like the added flavoring. Two distillate carts with different strain names but the same flavoring brand often taste identical.
